The Slake Snake Hill Climb is Back on November 3!

Whether you’ve tackled the Slake Snake before or are eager to take it on for the first time, it’s time to gear up for another round of fun and friendly competition.

By now, many of you know about Slake Brewing’s iconic driveway—you gain nearly 20 metres of elevation over just 1/3 of a kilometre, and it’s become one of the most contested Strava segments in the region. It’s a spicy 🌶️ challenge that’s both achievable and exciting, but what if you just hate climbing?

I remember absolutely dreading climbs. Having just finished a three-day gravel tour in Vermont, the feeling of approaching a steep incline is fresh in my mind. Climbing is part of every ride though, and I started to love riding a lot more after I started practicing my technique and watching my (super slow) improvement—both crushing the climb and enjoying the descent.

We hear a lot of people start cycling conversations with the phrase, “I’m not a racer…” and most of them think they’re alone in that category. It’s not true! Most of us aren’t racers, but all of us are trying to enjoy every ride more than the last, and improving is part of achieving that.

So this year, we’re once again inviting our entire community to join in and crush the climb at Slake Brewing. Come out with your toddlers on Shotgun seats and balance bikes, your adventurous dogs in trailers, have a father-son showdown: it’s all in the spirit of enjoying the ride. Our youngest rider ever (Rosie, 3) might make an appearance if we promise to bring snacks. One rider last year mentioned she had decided at the last minute to give it a shot: she rode over from Picton and crushed it! It’s a safe place to give it a shot and tacos are guaranteed at the top.

You don’t need to be a pro—or even an endurance rider—to tackle this challenge. The route is achievable for everyone from casual cyclists to professionals. Wave to the spectators or race against the clock; the choice is yours.

Whether you’re riding or cheering, you’re welcome to join us on the sidelines or at the top for high fives. Bring whatever bike suits you: gravel, mountain, touring, hybrid—even a tandem if that’s your style! Are you a kid? A grandparent? Only ever ridden downhill before? No problem—it’s all in good fun. Rally your supporters and equip them with bells and whistles to cheer you on. Warm up with Rebel Taco bites and Slake brews after your effort.
